A Hinglish chatbot is an AI reply bot that reads mixed Hindi-English messages typed in Roman script, like "ye XL me hai?" or "COD milega kya", and answers in the same style from your own product data. For an Indian D2C brand, the setup that works is simple: load your catalogue and prices, write down your COD, delivery and return rules, keep the bot on a strict answer mode, test it on 20 real Hinglish DMs, and hand anything order-specific or emotional to a person.

The moment that matters is usually late. A buyer in Indore watches your reel at 11:40 pm, types "cod h kya? aur M size bacha hai?" and waits. ClickPost's 2025 year-end report found that only 41% of orders on its platform were prepaid, so that COD question is the normal first question, not an edge case. If nobody answers until 10 am, she has had ten hours to find the same co-ord set elsewhere.

Key takeaways

  • Hinglish DMs mix Hindi grammar with English words and spell the same word many ways ("hai", "h", "he"), so keyword bots miss most of them.
  • An AI bot that answers only from your price list and policies can handle price, size, COD and delivery questions in Hinglish, and hands over when unsure.
  • Start in Strict mode and on night hours in IST, then widen once your 20-message test set passes.
  • Cash on delivery is still the majority: 59% of orders on ClickPost's platform in 2025 were not prepaid, so COD and delivery-charge answers matter most.
  • Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Update festive prices, offers and delivery cut-offs in your sheet by about 20 October.

What does a Hinglish customer message look like?

A Hinglish DM is usually Hindi sentence structure with English product words, typed in the Roman alphabet with little punctuation: "ye wala kurta blue me milega?", "delivery charges kitne h?", "return ho jayega agar fit nahi hua?". Buyers drop vowels, use short forms and often send three quick messages instead of one complete question.

Spelling is where it gets messy. "Hai" arrives as hai, h, he or hain; "kitna" as kitne or ktna. "Price kya hai" sits next to "rate btao" and "kitne ka padega". Some buyers switch to Devanagari halfway through (कितने का है?), and plenty write clean English on Instagram but Hinglish on WhatsApp.

Why do keyword bots fail on Hinglish?

Keyword bots match exact words, and Hinglish has no fixed spelling. A rule built for "price" misses "kitne ka h", "rate?", "kitna padega" and "₹??". Covering every variant takes hundreds of rules that still break on typos. An AI model reads the meaning of the whole message, so spelling variety matters far less.

That doesn't make AI bots perfect. Very short, low-keyword messages like "?", "isme" or "hmm" can still end up with a person, and that's fine. A bot that replies "Kaunsa product dekh rahe hain? Naam ya link bhej dijiye" is doing its job; a bot that guesses a product and quotes its price is not.

Roman Bangla and Roman Urdu behave the same way. Our Roman Bangla chatbot guide uses the same testing method, and our guide to AI replies in Roman Urdu for Pakistani sellers applies it to Urdu typed in English letters.

Instagram for discovery, WhatsApp for closing

Many Indian D2C brands get the first question on Instagram, from a reel, story reply or ad, and close on WhatsApp, the number printed on the website and the packaging. Your bot needs the same prices in both places, but the two channels follow different rules:

  • Instagram DMs follow Meta's 24-hour standard messaging window. After that, a person (not a bot) can still reply for up to 7 days using Meta's Human Agent tag.
  • WhatsApp opens a 24-hour customer service window each time the customer messages you. Inside it you can send normal replies. These were free until 30 September 2026; from 1 October Meta charges for each one beyond the first 1,000 per business number per month, at the utility rate for that market. Outside it you need an approved template, charged per message by category since 1 July 2025. India's rates changed on 1 January and again on 1 April 2026, so check Meta's current rate card before a broadcast.

So the 11:40 pm Instagram reply carries no Meta fee. The same reply on WhatsApp now does, unless the buyer came from a click-to-WhatsApp ad, where Meta's free entry point window (up to 7 days) still applies, or the number is still inside its 1,000 free service messages for the month. Either way the next-week follow-up needs a template. Meta's WhatsApp fees, where they apply, are separate from any inbox subscription.

How do you set up a Hinglish reply bot?

Set it up like any reply bot that answers from your own data, with two Hinglish-specific additions: a synonyms column for the words your buyers actually use, and a test set written in real Hinglish rather than translated English. In WisperBot, a reply-first inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat, that's six steps.

  1. Smart Bot. One bot per brand. Mixed catalogues are how bots end up quoting a serum price for a kurti.
  2. Business details. Dispatch city, delivery zones and times, COD fee, any prepaid discount and the exchange window, in plain English. The bot replies in the customer's language anyway.
  3. Knowledge. Shipping and return policies, size chart as text (not only an image), care notes, FAQ page. Then a short list of how your buyers say things: kurti and kurta, co-ord and coord set, "dupatta wala set".
  4. How it answers. Choose Strict: it answers only from your knowledge and sends anything else to your team. The app marks Balanced as recommended; move to it later if answers are accurate but stiff.
  5. Prices and live data. Connect your Shopify or WooCommerce-type store, or add a CSV file or a Google Sheet link (a CSV with a header row, up to 2 MB and 5,000 rows). One row per size and colour, plus a synonyms column. Our price list template for chatbots shows the columns.
  6. Where it answers. Set the inbox's AI answering, which covers Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger together, to Scheduled with India time as the timezone. Start with two windows a day: 12:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 9:00 PM to the end of the day.
Six-step flow for setting up a Hinglish AI reply bot: create bot, business details, knowledge with buyer phrases, Strict mode, price sheet with synonyms, scheduled night hours in IST
The six setup steps. Steps 3 and 5 carry the Hinglish-specific work.

Why nights first? A wrong answer at 2 pm gets caught by your team in minutes. No answer at 2 am costs you the sale. After a week of nights without a wrong price, extend the hours.

How should the bot sound in Hinglish?

Mirror the buyer. If they write Hinglish, reply in Hinglish; if they write English, reply in English; if they switch to Devanagari, follow them. Use "aap", not "tum", keep replies to two or three short lines, and put the number they asked for (price, days, fee) in the first line.

Avoid call-centre English like "Dear customer, kindly share your query". On Instagram it reads like nobody cares. Don't go too familiar either: "bro" works for some streetwear brands and nowhere else.

A good exchange, with illustrative prices:

Buyer, 11:52 pm, Instagram: hi ye black co-ord set M me available h?

Bot: Hi! Haan, black co-ord set M size mein available hai. Price ₹1,499 hai, aur ₹999 se upar ke orders pe delivery free hai.

Buyer: cod milega? jaipur

Bot: Ji, Jaipur mein COD available hai, ₹49 extra lagega. Prepaid karne pe 5% off hai. Delivery 3 se 5 din mein ho jaati hai.

Buyer: ok order kaise karu

Bot: Website pe is link se order kar sakte hain: [product link]. WhatsApp pe order karna ho toh hamari team kal subah 10 baje ke baad aapko message karegi.

No "inbox please", no "DM for price". The number comes first, and when the buyer wants to order by chat, a person takes over, because WisperBot doesn't take orders by itself.

Build a 20-message Hinglish test set

Copy 20 test messages from your own DMs, spelling mistakes and all. Don't translate English FAQs into "proper" Hindi; nobody writes to you like that. Here are 13 we would include.

Test messageWhat the buyer meansA pass looks like
kitne ka h yePrice of the product they replied toGives price if the product is clear; asks which product if not
XL bacha hai?Is XL in stockAnswers from stock data, never guesses
cod h?Is cash on delivery availableYes or no, plus the COD fee

kab tak aa jayegaDelivery timeA day range by zone, not a promised date
exchange ho jayega agar fit nahi hua?Exchange policyQuotes your policy window exactly
3 din pehle order kiya tha abhi tak nahi aayaWhere is my orderHands over to a person
colour photo jaisa hi hai na?Is the colour accurateAccurate answer from your notes, no promise

कितने का हैPrice, in DevanagariReplies in Devanagari with the price
bhai jaldi bataoImpatient follow-upShort apology, then the pending answer or a handover
paise kat gaye order nahi huaPayment deducted, no orderHands over straight away

A correct fact passes. A correct handover also passes. A wrong price fails, however polite it sounds. We'd want 20 out of 20 on price and policy before the bot runs nights alone, and a rerun after every big catalogue change. Our guide on stopping a chatbot from making up prices covers what to fix when a test fails.

When should the bot hand a chat to a person?

Hand over whenever the answer depends on one specific order, money has already moved, the buyer is upset, or the request sits outside your catalogue, such as bulk orders, influencer collaborations or custom sizes. In WisperBot each conversation has an AI/Human switch, so a teammate takes over with the whole chat visible and the bot stops replying.

Payments are the clearest case. If a buyer wants to prepay on WhatsApp, whoever picks up the chat can send a Razorpay Payment Link (Razorpay describes these as a way to "accept payments without a website or app") or a UPI request. WisperBot doesn't create payment links or connect to Razorpay, so that step stays human.

One morning rule for the team: open every overnight handover before anything new. Those buyers already waited.

What should you change before Diwali?

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, according to the central government holiday list for 2026. Update the bot by about 20 October: festive prices and offer codes in your sheet, last order dates for pre-Diwali delivery by zone, any COD changes, and longer human cover in the evenings.

Unicommerce reported 24% more orders across its platform over a 25-day festive period in 2025 compared with 2024, and 33% more on brand websites. More orders means a second wave of "kab tak aayega" and "exchange kaise karu" a week later, so load those answers before the sale.

Add a line like "Diwali se pehle delivery ke liye metro cities mein [date] tak order karein" to your knowledge. For the week itself, switch AI answering from night-only to Always on and plan your shifts with our sale-day inbox plan.

Where WisperBot fits

WisperBot puts Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and website chat in one inbox; its Smart Bot answers in the customer's language, Hinglish included, from your sheet or store, then hands over. You can start on the Free plan (one WhatsApp number plus web chat, 100 AI replies a month) and move to Starter at $15 or Growth at $39 a month. Billing is in US dollars by card; there's no rupee pricing yet.

It isn't the right fit if you need COD order capture, courier tracking updates or a WhatsApp catalogue checkout. India-focused platforms do more of that today; our WisperBot vs Interakt comparison sets out where each is stronger. See the Smart Bot product page for how answering works.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI chatbot understand Hinglish?

Yes, a modern AI chatbot can read most Hinglish messages because it looks at the meaning of the whole sentence rather than exact keywords. Spelling variety like "h", "hai" and "he" is handled well. Very short messages such as "?" or "isme" can still confuse it, so it should ask a clarifying question or hand over.

Should my bot reply in Hinglish or English?

Reply in whatever the buyer used. Hinglish gets Hinglish, English gets English and Devanagari gets Devanagari. Keep the tone polite with "aap", put the price or number first, and keep replies to two or three lines. Test with real messages before switching the bot on for daytime hours.

Is it OK to let a bot confirm COD orders?

We'd keep COD confirmation with a person or a WhatsApp template for now. WisperBot does not capture orders or connect to couriers, so the bot should answer COD questions and then hand over. Our guide to COD order confirmation on WhatsApp covers templates and timing.

How much does a WhatsApp reply bot cost for a small Indian brand?

WisperBot has a Free plan with 100 AI replies a month, Starter at $15 and Growth at $39 a month, billed by card in US dollars. Meta's WhatsApp fees, where they apply, are separate. Since 1 October 2026 Meta charges per message for replies inside the 24-hour customer service window, at India's utility rate, after 1,000 free service messages per business number each month, and for templates sent outside it.

Will the bot reply in Hindi script if the customer uses it?

The Smart Bot replies in the customer's language, so a message in Devanagari should get a Devanagari reply. Put two or three Devanagari messages in your test set, because your product names are probably in English and replies may mix both scripts.
